When you transfer a name to us that you've already registered elsewhere, an extra year is added to the time already left on your registration period. Transferring domain names require access and/or control of the existing registration. You can register as many domain names as you'd like for a site. For example, if you registered thisismywebsite.com, you could then also register mysite.com, or thisismywebsite.net and have them point to the first domain name. This lets you take advantage of shorter names, or common misspellings to help increase your site's traffic.

A domain name can also be registered without actually setting up a Web site, so you can reserve your domain long before you're even ready to complete your project.

When reading about domains, you might see the acronym 'TLD' used. This stands for Top Level Domain, and is referring to the part of the domain name at the end. The .com, .net, .org, etc. The TLDs are controlled by different organizations, and some (like .coop) have very specific requirements and guidelines.

When registering a domain, or transferring a name between registrars, be aware that there are sometimes delays. Some registrars have rules regarding how soon after a name is registered that it can be transferred. Other have rules regarding a name's expiration date, and might hold it for months beyond that time before releasing it. Usually there is a status code listed in the 'whois' information that can help provide a clue as to what your options are at any given point.
